Irente Viewpoint
From your hotel, set out on foot through small villages and a patchwork of farmland — banana, maize, vegetables and flowers spilling down the hillsides. Your guide will introduce you to the rhythms of mountain life along the way, and you may meet farmers happy to chat about what they're growing.
The trail climbs gently to the Irente cliff edge, where the ground simply falls away and the Mkomazi flood plains stretch out a thousand metres below. On a clear day you can pick out distant Maasai villages and the long lines of old German sisal estates. Lunch is served on the farm at the Irente Biodiversity Reserve — fresh bread, local cheese, jams, salad and homemade passion-fruit juice — about fifteen minutes' walk from the viewpoint.

Best time of year: June–October offers the clearest skies and the most striking views over the plains. April–May the path is greenest but views can be hazy.
