Pottery Workshop in Mtae
After breakfast, drive from Lushoto deep into the mountains, climbing through small villages and the cool air of the high Usambaras. Stop in Magamba village to taste boha (a traditional sugar-cane beer) at one of the local breweries, then continue up to Mabughai and the women's pottery workshop.
This is a working women's collective — they use a clay specific to this stretch of the mountains to shape pots, water containers and household pieces, and they'll happily teach you how to throw a small piece of your own. From there, drive on to Magumba View Lodge for lunch with one of the most striking views in northern Tanzania, before the slow drive home.
