Lushoto Historical Town Tour
Lushoto wears its history quietly. Step out of your hotel with a local guide and follow the streets through what was once Wilhelmstal — a hill-station retreat built by German settlers in the 1890s and named for Kaiser Wilhelm II. You'll wander through the morning market, where farmers from surrounding villages bring up vegetables, spices and freshly ground flour, before walking on past colonial-era cemeteries, an old hotel that is now the Catholic church, and a row of stately stone buildings that tell the story of the German and British administrations.
It is a gentle, almost meditative walk through a small town that has played a surprisingly large role in East African history.
