Magamba Rainforest
Leave your hotel and walk uphill through traditional Shambaa and Kilindi villages, where your guide will share stories of medicinal herbs, old kingdoms and which plants the local healers still use today. As you climb, the village fields give way to the cool, mist-soaked Magamba rainforest — one of the oldest pieces of montane forest in the Eastern Arc.
Inside the forest, look up: black-and-white colobus monkeys leap between the upper branches, and on a quieter day you may hear the troops of blue monkeys before you see them. The trail passes the famous German cave, dug during the First World War and now occupied by colonies of bats. Push on to the forest peak at around 1,840 metres, where lunch is served with views over Lushoto town and the royal village of Kwembago.

Best time of year: June–October for the clearest forest trails; chameleons and monkeys are seen year-round. After rain the paths become slick — boots are recommended.
