Lushoto to Maasai Plains

If you've already spent time in the Usambaras and want to leave the mountains in a memorable way, this is the route. You walk down off the escarpment and out into the plains over a single long day, then sleep with the Kisseri family at their boma before continuing onward.

Itinerary

Day 1

Carter's Peak to Mombo, then Boma Welcome

After breakfast, take private transport to Carter's Peak — the paragliding launch site high above the plains. From there, begin the long downhill hike through small farms and dramatic landscapes all the way to the town of Mombo. Lunch is taken in town.

After lunch, you'll be collected and driven to the Kisseri family Maasai boma where you'll be greeted with a small celebration. Depending on arrival time you can join the afternoon activities. As the day ends, the evening gathering begins with spear throwing and traditional dancing while dinner is prepared. For the curious, there is the chance to taste warm milk mixed with cow's blood — a traditional Maasai practice. Sleep in a tent under the African night sky.

Day 2

Boma Morning & Onward Travel

Join the family for milking or any of the small morning activities before saying goodbye and being driven back to Mombo. Public bus transport is pre-arranged so you can connect to your next destination, with arrival at Mombo timed between 10 AM and 12 PM depending on your bus schedule.

Note: a luxury bus ticket is included. If you'd like to extend your stay with the Kisseri family by an extra night, just ask — we can almost always arrange it.

Best time of year: June–October for the firmest descent from Carter's Peak. The plains are warm year-round; nights can still be cool — bring layers.
